Berhampur, March 15: Director-general of police Prakash Mishra today said Odisha had requisitioned 50 more companies of police from other states to conduct a free and fair election here.

“We are well prepared to conduct a free and fair election,” said the police chief.

“The 50 companies of police would be deployed in 10 Lok Sabha seats and 70 Assembly constituencies, which are scheduled to go to polls on April 10. They would be moved to other areas where polling would be conducted in the second phase on April 17,” he said.

Ninety-five companies of central paramilitary forces are now deployed in Maoist-affected areas of the state. “We have decided not to disturb them during the election. The central paramilitary forces, who are now engaged in anti-Naxalite operations, would not be deployed in election duty,” Mishra said.

“However, we have taken more precaution in the Maoist-affected areas.”

Elaborate security arrangements have been made in Gajapati and some parts of Kandhamal.

“We have already discussed with the Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Andhra Pradesh counterparts for a co-ordinated anti-Naxalite effort and maintain law and order during the election. The process is going on. Odisha and Chhattisgarh would have election on the same day, and we are conducting a strict vigil on the borders of our state.”

“The police are trying to curb the use of illegal arms and liquor during the election. They would also prepare a “dos and don’ts” list for the candidates, and we would give adequate security to the candidates.”

About 200 satellite phones will be used in the areas that lack mobile phone connectivity during the election for which permission has already been taken.

“We are going to deploy flying squad and static surveillance team for the first time during this election to monitor expenditure and possibilities of any manipulation by any candidates or parties.”

Mishra had earlier taken a review meeting with superintendents of police of Berhampur, Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal and Boudh about preparation of the police force for the ensuing election.
