The National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela organised the fifth International Students’ Meet from March 6 to 8. Various technical, cultural and sporting activities were held at the three-day event titled ISM2K15.
More than 250 participants from different countries such as Colombia, Ivory Coast, Sri Lanka, Mozambique, Bhutan, Afghanistan, USA, Thailand, Mauritius, Nepal, Bangladesh and Ethiopia took part in the meet. Besides, students from reputed national technical institutes from different parts of the country also took part in the extravaganza.
Fashion show, dance and singing competitions, along with a DJ event, were held. A sport called paintball was the biggest crowd puller.
Many digital activities and e-commerce related programmes were also organised. While the students of NIT, Rourkela played host to their foreign counterparts, the outsiders who had come to the institute for the first time had a great time.
Women’s day
The ever-growing problems faced by women were discussed at a special event organised on the occasion of International Women’s Day at the Ravenshaw University on March 8.
The programme was organised by the department of women’s studies at the heritage hall of the university.
The true essence of women’s day is personified by strength and courage and every woman should be bold enough to take on the challenges that come her way, said the speakers.
The students discussed about the rising incidents of atrocities against women and the declining sex ratio, which still remains a major concern for the society.
The speakers suggested that women should come at the forefront and misogynistic men should be reprimanded. They also called for a co-ordinated effort to ensure gender equality and awareness among the population to protect the girl child in our society.
Prospectus launch
The ever-growing problems faced by the ICFAI (Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts of India) University, Hyderabad launched their prospectuses for the under graduate programme on March 10.
The launching event was organised at a city hotel in Bhubaneswar. Trailokya Mishra, chairman-cum-managing director of ECP Industries Limited, Bhubaneswar, formally launched the prospectuses for BTech, BBA-LLB (hons) and BBA programmes. Run by the ICFAI Foundation for Higher Education, the faculty of science and technology will conduct the four-year eight- semester full time campus-based BTech programme. The ICFAI Law School offers an integrated five-year campus-based BBA- LLB (hons) programme and the BBA programme is a three-year course designed to enhance leadership skills that are required for managers. Sudhakar Rao, director of branding, ICFAI said students pursuing undergraduate courses at this university have to undergo internship at various companies in India.
Annual function
The annual function of the athletic and dramatic associations of Berhampur University was held at the Biju Patnaik auditorium on the campus on Monday.
Minister of higher education Pradeep Panigrahi and minister of sports and youth affairs Sudam Marandi addressed the function. The sports minister assured the students that the state would provide financial assistance to organise indoor games in the ladies hostels and develop infrastructure of the university playground.
Cyber focus
A leading expert on cyber laws on Saturday called for adoption of a proactive approach jointly by the governments, industries, individuals and public at large. He said it would effectively counter all forms of cyber crimes. He was speaking at a seminar organised by the NLSIU in collaboration with the SOA National Institute of Law (SNIL), the faculty of legal studies of the SOA University.
A. Nagarathna, the chief investigator at the Advanced Centre for Development and Training in Cyber Laws and Forensics at the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bangalore, addressed the training programme-cum-seminar on cyber security laws.
“There is a need to set up more agencies specifically entrusted with different tasks associated with combating cyber crimes, which should work in coordination with each other to achieve the objective,” said Nagarathna.
Sports coaching
Sports Authority of India (SAI) through its academic wing NSNIS (Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports), Patiala, is going to conduct a six-week certificate course in coaching at the KIIT University from May 14 to June 24, 2015.
The authority has approved athletics, basketball, football, hockey and volleyball for the certificate course.
The final decision for allotment of sports disciplines will be decided on the basis of numbers of applications. An amount of Rs 15, 250 will be charged for the duration of their stay to meet the boarding expenses. Application forms may be obtained from the KIIT website (www.kiit.ac.in) or downloaded from www.nsnis.org under the link academics. A minimum educational qualification for the candidates is Plus Two. All first, second and third position holders in district championships can apply.
Youth fest
The annual youth festival of Balasore College of Engineering & Technology, (BCET) known as ‘Charisma 2015’ was held on the college campus at Sergarh last week.
The three-day festival saw students organising several events and participating in various cultural, sporting, literary and other activities. On the final day, Sanatan Mallick, the district collector, along with senior scientist Nityananda Nayak addressed the students. They gave examples of scientists such as Albert Einstein and our former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and asked them to make these stalwarts their role models. They also encouraged the students to enhance their potential and creativity in an extremely competitive world.
