Cuttack, July 22: A team of entomologists from the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme today found an Aedes aegypti breeding site here.

The team detected larvae and a few adult mosquitoes inside abandoned tyres and other containers at a truck depot near Jagatpur industrial estate.

The detection has left the district administration and the Cuttack Municipal Corporation worried as they are struggling to contain the dengue outbreak at Jagatpur. The industrial estate has so far reported 277 cases of dengue. However, they were yet to take concrete measures to sanitise the depot. Besides, the locked units at Jagatpur have made it difficult for the civic body to sanitise these complexes.

At present, the industrial estate has 168 such complexes. The district administration has asked officials of the Odisha Industrial Development Corporation to get these locked units opened to detect the breeding sources and destroy them.

"We have already launched an operation to contain the outbreak. We will increase the awareness drive and destroy the breeding sites," said the programme's joint director Madan Mohan Pradhan.

Tehsildars of Tangi, Choudwar, Salepur, Mahanga, Baranga and Banki and block development officers of Kantapada, Salepur and Baranga have also been deployed to supervise the ongoing anti-dengue activities at Jagatpur.

District collector Nirmal Chandra Mishra said: "The Cuttack Sadar sub-collector will supervise the team and take appropriate measures."

The district administration, at a meeting today, also decided to seek help from police if the industrial units at Jagatpur did not clean up accumulated water.

As part of its ongoing drive to improve the area's sanitation, the Cuttack Municipal Corporation has decided to install hybrid toilets at the industrial area.

"We have requested the Odisha Industrial Development Corporation officials to provide land at Jagatpur to set up the toilets," said municipal commissioner Gyana Das.

Das also said the civic body had issued a temporary closure notice to Oro Pharmaceuticals at Jagatpur for not taking measures to maintain sanitation inside its complex.

Earlier, the civic body had temporarily sealed five industries, while 13 others were issued a show-cause notice for poor sanitation measures. This brings the total number of temporary closures to eight units, while 35 others have been served showcause notices.
