Cuttack, April 30: Resentment is brewing among the students over the evaluation and repeated cancellation of semester exams at the Ravenshaw University.

The semester examinations of several disciplines in the undergraduate streams, including arts, science, commerce and self-financing courses were cancelled following a strike call given by the fifth semester (third-year) students here on Thursday.

The fifth semester commerce students were protesting against the delay in the publication of the revised marks.

Though the authorities had earlier sought a week's time in publication of the result following a similar demonstration on April 16, it was not published.

Since no appropriate step was taken to resolve their grievances, the students staged another demonstration today. The students alleged that most of them were victims of wrong evaluation. They were awarded marks ranging from zero to 15 out of the 40 in the subjective exams, which is yet to be rectified.

"Following assurances by the authorities for a re-check of answer copies, we had called off our agitation. But due to the delay in the publication of the revised marks, we had to stage a demonstration again today," said Siddharth Das, a student.

On the other hand, the cancellation of the semester examinations following the demonstration had led to resentment by the second-year students, who locked up the main gate to register their protest.

"We had come to appear for the exam. But, due to the strike called by the third-year students, it was cancelled at the last minute. It is really frustrating since we have to again prepare for the exam," said Sandip Pradhan, a second-year student.

The fresh cancellation of examinations is bound to raise question about the administration of the premier educational institution of the state.

Sources said already two semester examinations, both in the undergraduate and postgraduate streams, had been rescheduled following students' unrest twice in the last one month.

The rescheduling of examinations is likely to further delay the completion of exams in the undergraduate and postgraduate streams ahead of the summer vacations.

"Today the examinations were disrupted due to the agitation by a few students. We have already completed the process of re-evaluation and the marks will be published shortly," said vice-chancellor of Ravenshaw University Prakash Chandra Sarangi.

Sarangi said the university would take necessary steps to resolve the grievances of the students. "Moreover, examinations cancelled today have been rescheduled and would be conducted on May 16," Sarangi said.
