Drunk man kills mother

A 36-year-old man allegedly hacked his 55-year-old mother to death in Rajnagar police station area after she had refused to pay him money for buying ganja.

Kendrapara: A 36-year-old man allegedly hacked his 55-year-old mother to death in Rajnagar police station area after she had refused to pay him money for buying ganja.

The incident occurred at Praharajpur village under Brahmanasahi gram panchayat on Thursday evening. The assailant, Sashikant Biswal, 35, who killed his widowed mother Srimati Biswal, was on Friday remanded to judicial custody, said Rajnagar police station inspector Sukant Kumar Patra.

Sashikant returned home drunk and was locked in a verbal duel with his mother. He was a ganja addict and told her mother to pay him money to buy ganja. Srimati rebuked him for perpetrating alcoholic nuisance and drug addiction and refused to give in to his demand. Then all on a sudden, he picked up a stick and hit her on head which turned fatal.

Srimati bled profusely and died unattended. Their family members were in outstation when the incident took place. Though Srimati cried for help, Sashikant failed to comprehend that he had dealt a fatal blow on her. He fell fast asleep under alcoholic influence. By the time he woke up, his mother had breathed her last. Local people found the woman lying dead on the spot. She was shifted to hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead, said police officials.

"It was an unintended murder. The accused was an alcohol and drug addict. He had dealt the lethal blow on his mother in an inebriated state," said a police official.

"Alcoholism has become rampant at several villages in Rajnagar police limits. The alcoholic habits of the male earning members are breaking up the families. Alcohol-induced violence is being reported at regular intervals in this police limits. The police are trying to involve civil society groups for sensitising people to give up the liquor addiction," the official said.
