Cuttack, Dec. 26: A woman has accused her husband, a well-known doctor, of torturing her for dowry.

The accused, ophthalmologist Raja Agarwal, 43, and his family members had allegedly beaten up his wife Pooja, says the complaint filed at Mahila Police station last week.

Mahila police have registered a case under 498 A (Protection of Women against Domestic Violence Act) after the victim and her family lodged an FIR on December 20.

Agarwal works as the chief medical officer at a private hospital in the city.

The couple had got married in 2002. Pooja has also accused her husband of having extramarital affairs during their stay in West Indies.

"There are severe injury marks on the victim's body, and based on the prima facie evidence, we have registered a case against the doctor," said assistant commissioner of police Sitaram Satpathy, adding that notices would be served to Agarwal and his family members to come to Mahila police station for questioning.

"My husband had started torturing me a few months of our marriage, and at that time, I brought the matter to the notice of in-laws as well as my parents. He (husband) also had demanded a dowry of Rs 5 lakh and continued to torture me frequently," said Pooja.

Sources said the estranged couple had two children. Agarwal had come back to India five years ago and started working with the charitable eye hospital.

The doctor and his family members could not be contacted despite repeated attempts by this newspaper.
