Cuttack: The ceasework by postgraduate doctors at SCB Medical College and Hospital showed no signs of a let-up on Thursday despite an assurance from the government that action would be taken based on the report of a committee that had inquired into their allegations.
Dean and principal of the medical college Sidhartha Das told The Telegraph on Thursday that the government was expected to take appropriate action on the basis of the report of the inquiry committee.
"The inquiry committee submitted its report on Wednesday night. The report was sent to the government today (Thursday)," Das said.
Around 450 postgraduate doctors have been boycotting hospital duty since Monday demanding an "impartial inquiry" into the alleged mental and physical harassment of their fellow members in urology department.
General secretary of postgraduate doctors' union Phanindra Kumar Swain on Thursday said: "The dean today told us that the inquiry committee's report has been submitted to the government. But we want to first see what step does the government take based on the report. We can think of calling off the ceasework only after that."
The postgraduate doctors of urology department had alleged that their head of department, Duteswar Hota, had been constantly harassing them mentally and physically.
The four-member committee has submitted its report after talking to various stakeholders, including all the 13 postgraduate doctors of the department.
"We have demanded his removal from the post of the head of the department. So, any negotiation is possible only after knowing the contents of the report of the inquiry committee," Swain said.
The hospital has been struggling hard to keep give patients proper health care service following the ceasework by the postgraduate doctors, who usually shoulder bulk of the work at the hospital, including routine-check up of patients.
Hospital superintendent Prashanta K. Nanda said that they were trying their best to manage the situation with the help of non-clinical and paramedical staff. "The government has also provided peripheral doctors as an emergency measure," Nanda said.
