Cuttack, Aug. 13: Get prepared for restricted traffic movement on the busy road between Buxi Bazar and Mangalabag via Mastan Dargha Chhak.
The restriction will be implemented shortly to facilitate construction of a sewer network for the integrated sanitation project funded by Japan International Co-operation Agency.
However, police will decide on when to start the diversion once official notification regarding commencement of construction is issued in the next two days. The diversion is expected to remain in force for at least a month.
According to the proposal, all three and four-wheelers coming from Machuabazar and Matamatha and heading towards Buxi Bazar will be diverted from Mastan Dargha Chhak to Girnar Hotel lane.
The Girnar Hotel lane route will also be utilised to divert vehicles from the Buxi Bazar side that are heading towards Cantonment Road, Matamatha and Machubazar.
"Girnar Hotel lane is very narrow and the diversion of three and four-wheelers will add to the chaos on this stretch," said Girish Swain, a commuter.
He said a number of car repair and spare parts shops were located there and often vehicles lie parked there.
"The traffic wing should take steps to remove encroachments on the road and then clamp restrictions or diversions to facilitate the construction," said Shankarshan Pradhan, another commuter.
Pradhan said the road in front of the headquarters of the director general of police could also be used to ensure smooth traffic flow.
The 2km stretch from near the fire station at Buxi Bazar to Howrah Motors Chhak via Mani Sahoo and Dargha Mastan road is one of the busiest in the city.
There is heavy traffic on the road, as most commuters, especially those coming from Dargha Bazar and Tinikonia Bagicha, prefer the route to travel towards Mangalabag via Buxi Bazar and Manisahoo Chhak.
Senior police officials, on the other hand, said that the executing agency had been asked to complete the job of laying the sewer network within 30 days.
Any violation of the order will attract stern action, said P.K. Dalai, assistant commissioner of police (traffic).
"A six-feet wide road will be kept open to facilitate the movement of pedestrians and light vehicles and two-wheelers," said Dalai.
A senior police official said adequate steps would be taken to ensure safety of the commuters. The agency has been asked to deploy 10 marshals to regulate traffic on the route, he said.
