Bhubaneswar, Dec. 30: An alleged notorious criminal Sukadev Behera alias Suka suffered bullet injuries during a police encounter at Dhauli last night.
Police said Suka was admitted to the Capital Hospital and later shifted to the SCB Medical College in Cuttack.
The cops said they acted on tip off and raided a place in Dhauli where Suka was planning a robbery.
"When our men tried to nab him he open fired at them. He suffered a bullet injury on his leg when the officials fired at him in retaliation. We have seized a pistol and two live ammunitions from the criminal," said deputy commissioner of police Satyabrata Bhoi.
The police said that they had intensified night patrolling in Dhauli after four goons looted gold rings and other valuables from three morning walkers near Lingipur on Wednesday. The police suspect Suka's involvement in these incidents of loot.
"Suka is involved in around 10 criminal cases, including robbery, snatching and dacoity in Bhubaneswar and adjoining areas. He was also involved in a firing incident near Rajmahal a few months ago. We are further verifying his antecedents," said a police official.
The police have also issued directions to cops deployed at the hospital to remain alert so that Sahu does not escapes.
In March, the police had suspended six personnel, including Khandagiri police station assistant sub-inspector Gourahari Mallick, for negligence leading to the escape of dreaded criminal Shahjahan alias Patu from the SCB Hospital in Cuttack.
Patu was admitted in the hospital after he was injured during an encounter with the police at Ghatikia in Bhubaneswar. However, he managed to escape, while he was being taken to the orthopaedic ward of the medical college for the plastering of his injured ankle. The police finally managed to nab him in November.
