Cops face mob fury in Phulbani

Four policemen, including two women officers, were injured on Thursday after a mob attacked them at Danguli village in Sadar police limits of Kandhamal district.

Phulbani: Four policemen, including two women officers, were injured on Thursday after a mob attacked them at Danguli village in Sadar police limits of Kandhamal district.

The mob attacked a police jeep and and held the personnel hostage for nearly two hours. The mob assaulted the cops who had gone to the village to probe into the alleged torture of a Dalit family by some villagers, said the police.

"The injured cops, besides the three members of the family who were allegedly persecuted, were rescued after reinforcements reached the spot. The injured have been admitted to the hospital," said Kandhamal superintendent of police Prateek Singh.

Armed police have been deployed in the village to control the situation, he said.

The police reached the spot after the family complained that they were being ostracised and tortured.

The police said a case has been registered in this connection. The troublemakers involved in the violence would be arrested shortly. The members of the Dailt family have been sheltered in Phulbani.
