Cuttack: A 35-year-old man has allegedly confessed to police that he murdered the bridegroom-to-be of his sister-in-law (wife's sister) just two days before their marriage was to be solemnised.

Sambit Kumar Senapati had admitted to killing Nirjhar Behera near the old toll gate counter of Birupa bridge on January 7 night, deputy commissioner of police Akhileswar Singh said on Friday.

Senapati is being interrogated in police custody since Thursday.

Senapati had also allegedly guided the police to recover the weapon of offence (a katuri) from a bush near the Birupa barrage where he had thrown it.

The marriage of Behera, an assistant manager at Stewart School, Bhubaneswar, was to be solemnised on January 10. The wedding was planned at Mandapada Church near his home at Kapileswar.

The bride was from Mandapada in the same Choudwar police station limits.

Senapati, who had good relations with the bride (her sister-in-law) and had been in regular touch with her, was reportedly infuriated when the ring ceremony for the marriage was organised on May 27 last year.

"Senapati became aggrieved and planned to kill Behera," said a police officer.

On the night of January 7, Senapati had called Behera to meet at Birupa bridge.

When Behera arrived at the spot, Senapati killed him with the katuri after a heated exchange of words.
