Comfy cushions for snug living rooms

Bhubaneswar, Aug. 18: A beautiful and manicured home is a reflection of ones personality is well known fact. All those conscious about home décor consider every minute detail when it comes to styling sprucing up their interiors.

In the plush houses of the capital especially, one may come across cosy lounges and luxurious sofa sets that an outstanding style element as they heighten the look of the rooms.

Gorgeous cushions in traditional designs but with a contemporary touch have become mandatory for swanky homes in Bhubaneswar nowadays.

Small throw pillows to the two-foot square cushions, in a wide range of colours and designs are available at furnishing stores across the city. People who are keen revamping their interiors seem to be too keen on collecting these trendy paraphernalia.

“A thick mattress laid at the corner of a small room with matching bed-sheets spread on and that is flanked by embroidered cushions in silk can really infuse life in a tiny space,” says interior designer Soma Kalia.

With well-adorned and embellished covers, cushions can be arranged on sofa having contrasting shades in order to give a stylish appearance to the room, she added.

Most of the hottest designs come in silk with deep shades of maroon, magenta, beige, royal blue, and shimmering green.

Cotton printed cushions with geometric patterns in hues of lemon yellow, blue, orange, red and other bright colours are also popular. Ethnic designs such as tribal paintings, floral motifs also have a great demand.

“Vibrant colours on different fabrics look fashionable and are very much in demand. Satin and velvet are also popular among customers,” says Satyajit, store manager, Welhome.

Chain stitch and kantha patterns are also catching up of late.

“I wanted to give a traditional look to my living room and therefore I picked up two pairs of kantha embroidered cushions and placed them on my bamboo furniture. It’s raining compliments ever since,” says housewife Mamata Mohanty.

Some people also prefer patchworks, appliqué and lacework as they too are in vogue.

“For giving a classic look to the rooms, wooden sofa sets could be decorated with thick quilts and cushions having appliqué, beads, mirrors or patchwork, adorning them. These can surely do wonders to the drawing room,” adds Kalia.

Cushions not only add sophistication but also provide comfort to ones backbone while sitting.

“I always prefer placing a small cushion behind my chair since it makes me sit in a comfortable posture,” says Prasad, a software engineer.

The cushions are found in one-foot square size and are also found as large pillows. The quilt in between the cushions decides its price.

Many of them have readymade designer covers but printed ones too can be draped on cushions later on.

The range starts from Rs 200 onwards for the square pillows available at furnishing stores across the city.

One can also find them at cheaper rates at Market Building. Plain cushion covers begin at Rs 20 per piece while embellished ones start at Rs 150 onwards.
