Vibgyor 2K13, the two-day annual festival of Institute of Dental Sciences under the Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan University, Bhubaneswar, was celebrated on March 5 and 6. A food fest attracted gourmets on campus while teachers and students put up a cultural show in the evening. The highlight of the event was a performance by former reality music show contestant Amey Date and other folk dance troupes of the state. Earlier, top bureaucrat T. Ramachandru inaugurated the fest along with SoA vice-chancellor Prof R.P. Mohanty and gave away the prizes to winners of each contest.
Dressed to kill
A fashion show marked Vogue-2013, the annual event of the National Institute of Fashion Designing, Bhubaneswar, on March 18. The students put up a show of costumes that they had designed. The parade turned out to be a blend of tradition and modernity. The students-turned-models demonstrated confidence and oomph as they walked the ramp.
Achievers’ club
Suraj Singh Thakur, a final-year BTech student of KIIT University, secured fourth position in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering-2013, the result of which was declared on March 15. Two others of the same class, Parikshit Prasad and Bhuban Singh, secured 21st and 23rd ranks, respectively. KIIT bagged four out of the top 100 ranks. This apart, BTech students received 34 call letters from IIMs through their performance in CAT. Some students have got admission offers from as many as seven IIMs. On the other hand, KIIT founder Achyuta Samanta received Honoris Causa degree from the Czech University of Life Sciences, Prague, on March 11 for selfless and dedicated contribution towards society, particularly in the field of education.
Health centre
Institute of Medical Sciences and Sum Hospital, run by the SoA University, Bhubaneswar, has decided to set up a Centre of Excellence for Gastrointestinal, Liver and Pancreatobiliary Sciences because of an alarming rise in gastro-intestinal and liver diseases. The state-of-the-art centre will offer comprehensive treatment and care under one roof for gastrointestinal, biliary, pancreatic and liver diseases. An experienced team of doctors will be in charge of the department.

Asian School of Business Management, Bhubaneswar, maintained its consistent performance in campus recruitment with 114 graduates of the 2013 batch being absorbed in various multinational companies. This was the first round of placement at the institute visited by over 30 top notch companies such as Nestle, Asian Paints, ITC, Vodafone, Colgate, UCO bank, ICICI, HDFC Bank, Allahabad Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, Reliance Retail, Godrej & Boyce and Gati Ltd among others.
Patents granted
National Institute of Technology, Rourkela, has been granted two patents from the controller general of Patents Design and Trademarks under the Union ministry of commerce and industry. The patent titled “Process for extraction of fine iron from red mud” now belongs to research scholar R.C. Sahu, metallurgical engineering professor B.C. Ray and chemistry associate professor R.K. Patel. The credit for “chemical dentrification of water by hydroxylamine hydrochloride” goes to Patel and research scholar M. Islam.
Shades of women
A three-day art camp was organised at Balasore Art and Crafts College to mark International Women’s Day on March 8. Around 40 women artists, including 12 from outside the state, took part in the event. The creations focussed on women empowerment and better opportunities for them.
From across the shores
International Student Meet-2013 concluded on Sunday at National Institute of Technology (NIT)-Rourkela. Lanterns floated skywards, lighting up a starless night even as Bollywood singer KK belted out his most popular numbers. Students were also treated to a heady mix of music and rib-tickling jokes, courtesy television show singers Vinay Mohanty and Deepali and stand-up comedian Anirudh Madesia. Flautist Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia also regaled the youngsters. The three-day event saw huge participation of students from foreign shores who, in partnership with the young techies of the host institute, channelised their energy through creative and challenging tasks including a fashion parade, laser show, technical competitions and sports.
Sports time
Students of Driems, Cuttack, turned players and sweated it out at their annual sports meet, Josh-e-Raftaar, on Sunday. Starting from cricket, table tennis, badminton and squash to musical chair, the participants hopped from one event to another enthusiastically. Amrit Kumar Jena of postgraduate diploma management and Rosalin Chand of BBA were declared the champions in the boys and girls categories.
Child care
Youth Council for Development Alternatives organised a state-level sharing workshop on kinship care in Bhubaneswar on March 18. The objective was to share the findings and learning of the participatory action research on Kinship care conducted in collaboration with Bangalore-based organisation, Every Child India. Odisha State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Saraswati Hembram inaugurated the event.
