Bhubaneswar, July 27: Most colleges here have been left with huge number of vacant seats after completion of the first round of admissions for Plus Three degree courses.

Following the first selection, as many as 857 seats in arts, 475 seats in commerce, 355 seats in physical sciences, 265 seats in biological sciences and 135 in self-financing are lying vacant across 16 colleges in Bhubaneswar.

BJB Autonomous College has been left with 435 vacant seats. These include 167 seats in arts, 101 seats in commerce, 81 seats in physical sciences, 47 seats in biological sciences and 39 seats in self-financing courses.

Similarly, Ramadevi Women’s Autonomous College has been left with 154 vacant seats. The Basic Science and Humanities Degree College and the Maharshi College of Natural Law have been left with 141 and 164 vacant seats respectively.

“We did not expect that such a large number of seats would remain vacant. We, however, expect to fill up all the seats during spot admission,” said principal of BJB Autonomous College Suresh Pattnaik.

“This indicates that students must have applied for multiple institutes, technical colleges and other professional courses simultaneously. They must have decided to opt for technical education and other professional courses over general studies,” he said.

Academicians said although e-admission provided a chance for students across the state to choose colleges without moving out of the comforts of their home, most of the students opted only for the courses of their interest when the admissions began.

High cut-off marks are believed to be another reason for vacant seats in various colleges this year.

The first selection list of degree colleges was announced on July 10 and first round of admissions were conducted between July 16 and 20.

Admission of students of scheduled castes and scheduled tribes category began today.

A list will be published tomorrow notifying vacant seats in colleges and a round of spot admissions will be conducted on July 31. There will not be any second round of admissions this year.
