Children science congress

Teachers from across the state came together to attend a state-level training session to prepare the students ahead of the 22nd National Children Science Congress-2014 at the Vidwan Concept School. The theme for this year’s congress is “Understanding weather and the climate.” Resource teachers and district co-ordinators from all the 30 districts of Odisha took part in the training programme where ideas were discussed on how to help students develop scientific models on the theme. The primary objectives of the Congress is to make a forum available to children to exhibit their creativity and innovativeness and more particularly their ability to solve a societal problem experienced locally using science, said U.C. Mohanty, president, Odisha Bigyan Academy and professor, IIT Bhuabneswar. He was the chief guest of the programme.

Vanmahotsava

The students of St Xavier’s High School, Satyanagar, celebrated vanmahotsava with great fervour and excitement on the school premises.

Titled ‘Go Green’, the students in their house teams planted as many trees as they could at the event. Special emphasis was given to the process of “vegetative propagation” through various means. Students displayed the process of plantation using roots in case of sweet potato, stem cutting in rose and hibiscus, layering in case of grass, rhizome in ginger, suckers in mint, corm in Colocasia, leaves in Bryophyllum, grafting in Hibiscus, apart from the normal use of seeds in case of mango and pulses. The theme of the event was to spread awareness of plant propagation using all the parts of the plant.

Kargil Divas

DAV Public School, Chandrashekharpur and Pokhariput commemorated the 15th anniversary of the Kargil Vijay Divas with many patriotic and cultural programmes. NCC cadets and other students of the school took part in the event and paid homage to the martyrs. At DAV, Pokhariput, the cadet of the Army and Air Wings (JD/JW) narrated the stories of soldiers who laid their life against intrusion and they observed the victory with all solemnity and decorum. Principal of the school, Sujata, urged the students to remember the sacrifices of the Kargil heroes, who played an important role in the iconic victory. The regional director K.C. Satapathy, chairman of the school managing committee, encouraged the students to follow the footprints of the martyrs of the country.

Conference time

About 1,200 students from across the world, including Egypt, Tunisia, Bangladesh, China, Singapore, USA, UAE, Russia, Morocco were at the SAI International School to discuss and deliberate various issues of global importance. The programme titled SAIMUN kicked off on July 25. Department of school and mass education minister, Debi Prasad Mishra, inaugurated the conference. MUN (model united nations) is a conference similar to the United Nations in which students took part as delegates to various UN committees. Participants research and prepare discussions based on the actual policies of the countries they represent.
