Bhubaneswar, May 5: This summer, teachers of government schools across the state will skip their vacations so that they ‘learn to teach better’.
Waking up to concerns over quality of teaching in government schools, the state government is all set to launch an in-service training for teachers from May 10. Samarthya, as the programme has been named, will be organised in six schools of the capital.
The training programme, which will be attended by 7,608 teachers, will run in five phases. In the first phase, about 1,512 teachers from six districts of Orissa will receive training in elementary and secondary education levels.
“Ninety-two resource persons will be conducting the training,” said a senior official of the school and mass education department. These teachers will be trained in Oriya, mathematics, modern Indian languages, English, history, science, geography, right to education and the national curriculum framework.
After training, these teachers will be required to go back to their respective areas and conduct training by themselves for the local schoolteachers. This will continue from June 17 to February 28, 2012, during which, at least 1,27,982 teachers are expected to be trained. It would also include teachers from schools that are under the SC/ST department.
While the maximum number of teachers (11,822) will be trained from Mayurbhanj, only 2,119 teachers will be trained from Boudh. The programme is being organised by the pedagogy department of the Orissa Primary Education Promotion Authority.
“Not more than 50 teachers will be trained at one place. Similarly, orders have also been passed so that all schools remain open during the training period. Classes will also run as usual on opening of the schools after the vacations,” said the official.
The programme has been designed keeping in mind the training needs of the teachers. The teachers were asked to submit their preference of subjects in which they would wish to be trained. Accordingly, the training module was prepared by the State Council Educational Research and Training.
“Through Samarthya programme, the school and mass education department aims to improve the quality of teaching in government schools across the state,” she said.
