Koraput: The Central University of Odisha resumed academic activities on Tuesday after being closed sine die for nearly three weeks.

The varsity was closed on March 15 following student unrest demanding fulfilment of a 60-point charter of demands.

"After reviewing the prevalent situation and unanimous recommendations from heads of various departments and officials concerned, we decided to re-open the varsity and conduct regular classes," said varsity vice-chancellor Sachidananda Mohanty.

Mohanty said the students had started returning to the main campus at Sunabeda after hostels and departments were opened. A varsity official said the varsity had fulfilled several demands of the students that were under its purview. It was also making efforts to fulfil their other demands, the official said.

"Demands such as infrastructure proposals and recruitment of teaching faculty members are pending with the Union ministry of human resources development and University Grants Commission. We will make efforts to secure early sanction for those," Mohanty said. "The varsity will never avoid the genuine demands of students and we are hopeful that normality will be restored and students will concentrate on their careers and join hands with the varsity to take it forward," he added.

Set up in 2009, the varsity has 14 departments with 850 students.

Tension had gripped the main campus on the night of March 14 when the students staged a dharna to demand fulfilment of their demands that included appointment of permanent professors, round-the-clock health care facility on campus, Wi-Fi, hostel facilities for research scholars, shifting the main administrative office from Landiguda to the main campus, 24-hour water supply and photocopying facilities at hostels, installation of ATM kiosks on campus among others.
