Bhubaneswar, Dec. 9: The spirit of Christmas has gripped the city with people, irrespective of race and religion, indulging in the festive fervour.
Members of Bhubaneswar Christian Community today organised a cultural programme at Rabindra Mandap here to usher in the Christmas festivities. The community is an association of over 74 churches and para-church organisations.
Chief guest at the event governor S.C. Jamir said: "Christmas is observed to celebrate universal brotherhood. The blessings of God are sought for peace in the society. The pre-celebrations will add to the festive fervour."
The evening saw groups from some of the member churches present their acts. While one group sang hymns about the message of Christmas, others presented dance performances to songs signifying the true meaning of the festival.
Members of different churches and church organisations presented an Odissi performance on the occasion to spread the message of unity among all religious and social communities.
The highlight of the evening was a performance depicting the life of Jesus Christ in the form of a dance drama.
"The performance touched all the important events of Christ's life beginning with the story behind his birth to the miracles he performed during his lifetime and his crucifixion. It was very emotional," said Laxmipriya Debampriya, a 24-year-old college student.
"It was wonderful to see members from all communities participate and greet each other during the celebrations. It is a major festival and observations and celebrations have already begun," said Ananya Rana, a homemaker.
With Christmas being synonymous with cakes and lip-smacking goodies, the community members indulged in sweet treats.
A number of festivities are being held across the city ahead of the festival. A couple of the popular hotels already had their plum cake-mixing ceremonies a fortnight ago while confectioneries are busy churning out yummy cakes and goodies.
