Bhubaneswar, June 10: Long wait for marriage certificates is shortly going to be over as couples can receive them at the venue itself.
The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation has asked its IT experts to incorporate an option of "on-site" marriage certificate on its e-governance portal. Once the system falls in place, officials would visit the venues and issue certificates to the couples instantly.
Civic body commissioner Krishan Kumar said: "This would be a step towards providing a hassle-free registration system to the couples, who are tying the knot. This could be a perfect gift from the civic administration on the wedding day." He said the online applications would also be made less time-consuming.
Sources, however, said that to have the on-the-spot marriage certificates, people would have to wait for a few months, as incorporation of the option on the corporation's portal would take some time.
According to the present practice, applicants have to deposit a challan in treasury account and then visit the civic body to get the registration certificate. This takes a lot of time. But once the new system rolls out, applicants can pay all their dues online through a single window system.
Moreover, like the online passport application, they can deposit the documents online and get them verified apart from getting a particular date and time for marriage registration.
"Online appointments will be valid for about two months from the date of seeking it. However, if an applicant fails to reach at the given time and date, he or she can also reschedule it," said a senior official.
While on one hand, there would be option for the applicant to re-schedule one's appointment, on the other, if the corporation makes a change in the schedule, it would inform them through SMS or e-mail.
Once the online application verification process begins, the applicants will have three weekdays to obtain certificates instead of the present two.
The documents collected in the past by the civic body for issuing marriage certificates would be digitised for future reference. Duplicate certificates can also be issued on the basis of these records.
