Bhubaneswar, Aug. 22: Traffic violations continue to be frequent in the capital as on an average 350 persons are caught flouting traffic rules every day.
The state government is considering setting up a closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveillance system in the city. Moreover, it will also keep a tab on criminals and help the police check crime rate in the city. The city will come under a single network.
Chief minister Naveen Patnaik today said in the Assembly: “The surveillance system will be integrated with video data analysis, command and control system to strengthen the crime-control system in the city.”
The CCTVs would be installed at 83 places across the city. A total of 49 traffic intersections will come under the CCTV vigil. Apart from this cameras would also be installed at sensitive zones and places of large gathering. The Ernst and Young has prepared the detailed project report. “The cost is estimated at Rs 20.61 crore as per the project report,” Naveen said.
Senior police officials said that as the camera cost has come down, the expenditure on installing the cameras will come down by Rs 5 to Rs 6 crore.
Police commissioner B.K. Sharma said: “Around 430 cameras would be installed.” Two types of cameras — fixed and PTZ (pan tilt zoom) — with remote-directional and zoom-control system would be installed. The PTZ camera is known as eye-camera. Sharma said: “The cameras will be all-weather ones and fitted in high places to avoid any harm.”
The city will be divided into six zones. In each zone, a BTS (base transceiver system) would be set up. Each BTS will be connected to specific number of cameras. Once the cameras capture the images, it would send those to the BTS through wire system. The BTS will immediately transmit the images to the police control room and the police commissioner’s office. A video wall will be installed there to screen the pictures. It will also be connected to the modern control room.
Sharma said: “The police will quickly respond to the complaints through its mobile PCR (police control room) van deployed across the state.”
“We will feed the CCTVs with many inputs. After capturing an image, it would transmit the image to the modern control room. There will be a beep on the computer in the modern control room,” said a senior police officer.
The CCTVs would be installed at AG Square, Raj Mahal Square, NICCO Park Square, Kalinga Hospital Square, Patia Square, CRPF Square, Kalpana Square, Achrya Bihar Square. Master Canteen, Laxmi Sagar Square, Khandagiri Square, KIIT Square, Sishu Bhavan Sqaure, Jaydev Bihar, Kalapana Badagada Square, Vani Vihar, Raj Mahal Square and all other major traffic intersections.
They would also be installed at Governor House, secretariat, Lingaraj temple, Mausima temple, Nandankanan, Hotel Mayfair, Hotel Swosti Plaza, Hotel Pal Height, near Pantaloon, Kalinga stadium, Assembly, Utkal University, Unit-IV masjid, Unit-I market, Unit-II market, Unit-III market, Ravindra market, railway station, airport, SBI and Dhauli peace pagoda.
