Bhubaneswar, June 12: Police today began analysing footage from CCTV cameras at Pipili toll plaza to solve the murder of Manoranjan Behera, who was shot dead on Bhubaneswar-Puri highway on Friday.

Frequent changes in statement by the woman, who had accompanied Manoranjan when he was shot near Satasankha in Puri district, has also confused the police in their attempt to ascertain the motive behind the murder.

Manoranjan, 46, succumbed to gunshot wounds, while his companion, Renubala, suffered injuries. Renubala had claimed that the alleged murderers opened fire after he foiled a snatching bid.

"The woman had initially identified herself as the deceased's wife. But she changed her statement and said that she was a distant sister-in-law. She also told us that Manoranjan met her by chance at Vani Vihar and they decided to visit Puri for a darshan of Lord Jagannath," said a police officer.

The woman's decision to rush the injured Manoranjan to the district headquarters hospital has also raised suspicion. "We had asked her to admit him to the nearby hospital in Sakhigopal, but she admitted him to the district hospital," the officer said.

The cops had also interrogated Renubala's husband and other relatives yesterday, but they failed to provide any clue. "We will examine Renubala's call records. We suspect the murder was a case of revenge killing, stemming from an extra-marital affair. We are also probing whether robbery was the sole intention," the officer said.

The incident took place around 1.40pm on Friday when the duo were on their way to Puri on a motorcycle. Renubala had told the police that two men in another motorcycle chased them and snatched her gold chain. She claimed that they fired two rounds at them after Manoranjan resisted their robbery bid.
