Cuttack, Sept. 15: Normality has been restored on the Ravenshaw University campus, which turned tense following a scuffle between two student groups yesterday evening.

The majority of the university students attended classes today. “We came to know about the clash around 7pm yesterday. Though we were not on the campus, we were a bit apprehensive about attending classes today. However, the academic atmosphere has been calm,” said Snigdha Mohanty, a student.

Trouble had erupted on the campus after students of the information and technology management (ITM) allegedly aimed unpleasant remarks at a group of new hostel students, who were standing near the ITM department. A verbal duel ultimately led to a violent clash between them around 5.30pm yesterday.

At least two BBA students, who were staying in the new hostel, sustained minor injuries after the ITM students allegedly beat them up.

Following the clash, senior officers of the police rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the students.

A few students from both groups were detained and subsequently released after they gave an undertaking stating they would not indulge in further violence.

“It was a minor clash between the students. The matter has been resolved following assurances from the students, their guardians and the authorities,” said a senior police officer.

“The matter has been sorted out and things are normal now. We are not aware of the reason (of what led to the violence) but it has nothing to do with pre-poll violence. We are yet to receive any notification about the students’ union election,” said university registrar Smarapriya Mishra.
