Cuttack, April 8: The Cuttack Municipal Corporation today carried out an eviction drive at Belleview.

The drive is part of the ongoing efforts of the civic body to put a check on unauthorised structures hindering the smooth flow of traffic at major junctions of the city.

A corporation official said nearly 20 unauthorised shops and temporary kiosks were demolished during the drive that was carried out from Belleview in CDA to Bidanasi via Shivaji Nagar.

“We have demolished encroachments from near the newly-built judicial academy at Belleview and at other prime locations at Bidanasi today. A single-storey house constructed without approval was also bulldozed,” said corporation secretary Laxmidhar Nath.

The eviction has been carried out following a high court order and all encroachments at other parts of the city will also be cleared, he said.

“A large number of kiosks and shops had come up on government land near the judicial academy, creating problems for commuters since people were parking their vehicles on the main road,” said Ayaskant Das, a commuter.

Belleview is among the busiest roads of the city that acts as a link between vital destinations such as CDA, Naraj, high court and Chandni Chowk. A number of educational institutions, including the National Law University, are also located on the stretch of road from Belleview to CDA and Naraj.

The corporation has chalked out a massive eviction programme that will continue till May.

The civic body had also cleared roadside encroachments from Rehman Chhak at Jobra last month. Over 35 encroachments were cleared during that drive.
