Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government on Thursday approved a supplementary budget of Rs 12,768 crore for this fiscal to meet the requirements of the newly announced state-funded schemes.
It has announced several schemes, including the Biju Swasthya Kalya Yojana and the Odisha Food Security Scheme.
The yojana was launched on August 15 to provide health care up to Rs 5 lakh each to 70 lakh families. The food scheme will be launched on October 2. It will cater to 34.44 lakh poor families, who have been left out of the National Food Security Scheme, in which the beneficiary gets 5kg food grains per head every month.
Opposition Congress and the BJP were criticising the Naveen Patnaik government for announcing schemes one after another without making budgetary provisions.
"Our government has, therefore, brought supplementary budget to place funds for these schemes to silence the Opposition," said a BJD leader.
Odisha finance minister Sashi Bhusan Behera said the budget would be presented on September 4 on the first day of the Assembly's monsoon session.
"It was felt required to bear the expenses on implementation of central sector schemes, centrally sponsored schemes, state's own schemes and the new ones," he said.
Though Behera evaded the media query on the exact quantum of this year's supplementary budget, he said: "In view of trend of general budget growing bigger, the supplementary budget would be bigger that last year's."
Sources said the size of this year's supplementary budget would be to the tune of Rs 12,768 crore. Last year, its size was Rs 9,822 crore.
