Budding scientists impress with ideas

Hundreds of enthusiastic budding scientists from across the state brought more than 400 projects to the 43rd state-level Science, Mathematics, and Environmental Exhibition and the 5th state-level Exhibition and Project Competition.

Bhubaneswar, Nov. 1: Hundreds of enthusiastic budding scientists from across the state brought more than 400 projects to the 43rd state-level Science, Mathematics, and Environmental Exhibition and the 5th state-level Exhibition and Project Competition.

The exhibitions began at the Unit IX Boys' High School here today. The events are as part of Inspire - a national-level initiative to identify scientific talent among students.

About 1,000 students from 30 districts, accompanied by their guide teachers, are taking part in the three-day event. "Science enthusiasts had a field day today. They have carried their models all the way from the various districts. It is wonderful to watch them explain their models patiently to each and every visitor," said P.K. Sahoo, a teacher.

A team of 12 experts has been formed to judge the projects. The students made their models designed on the theme - "solution for everyday life." The sub-fields are health, nutrition and cleanliness, resource management, industry, agriculture and food safety, disaster management and mathematics.

The students provided solutions to everyday problems related to transport, health, industry and environment.

"I have designed a solar car for the handicapped. The judges' appreciation of my efforts is encouraging," said Tushar Patnaik, a student from Rayagada.

"This is a wonderful experience for me. I am so happy and excited to have been selected for the prestigious state-level event and I have been working on my project for more than three months now. I learnt more with each passing day" said Bharti Mohapatra from Boudh. Bharti has designed a low-cost refrigerator.

As part of the Inspire theme, some of the participants have received Rs 5,000 to them pay for the cost of the model preparation.

"The participants were short-listed after two rounds - first at the block level, followed by the district level. The selected candidates from this state-level exhibition will represent the state at the national and international levels," said Nibedita Nayak, a senior officer of SCERT, which is organising the event.

School and mass education secretary Ranjana Chopra called upon students to develop a scientific temperament and enhance their problem-solving skills. Alongside the exhibition, the department has also organised seminars, popular tasks and entertainment programmes for the participants.

Prize distribution will take place on the concluding day.
