Bhubaneswar, Feb. 17: Around 500-odd Btech students who took admissions through second Orissa Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) are struggling to inch closer to their counterparts, who have managed to cover their syllabus.

While students of the first JEE batch took admissions in August, by the time the second JEE was completed, it was already November.

Despite taking special classes, the second JEE students continue to trail far behind when it comes to covering the course.

“There were three of us who got through at the second JEE examination. We are being taught separately and have a different timetable. It obviously feels awkward. One does not like to sit in a class comprising of only three students,” said student Prachi.

“At my institute, we have been asked to take up classes for the first semester and the second semester as well. It hardly leaves up with any breathing space. There is hardly any time for preparations,” said Anshumaan, another student.

“It is not only difficult for student, but also for the college management. Faculty members also find it uncomfortable to repeat the same classes twice and that too for only a handful of students. But we have no options,” said Antaryami Badu, chairman, Aryan Institute of Engineering and Technology.

Besides conducting a separate examination for these students, completing formalities will be an additional burden, feel the college authorities.

The first semester for the Btech students began on February 3 and ended today. However, there has been no notification for the second JEE students yet.

“Extra classes are being held for these students and they are being taught in separate sections. The first semester examinations, which were scheduled in December, are being held in February. It is already delayed.

“We cannot afford to delay it further for the second JEE students. Efforts are on to see that these students also finish their examinations as soon as possible,” said Binod Das, president, Orissa Private Engineering College Association.

Meanwhile, the Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT) is contemplating to cancel the summer vacations for these students so that they can make use of the time to cover the courses.

“The summer vacations should be cancelled so that students can catch up with their class mates in the first JEE batch, “ said Das.

If the second JEE students manage to cover the syllabus by end of the vacations, there will be no problem in conducting the third semester for both the batches together.
