Clash at varsity
Cuttack: Three students suffered minor injuries following a clash between two groups at Ravenshaw University on Monday evening, causing unrest on campus. Sources said the scuffle broke out after an aspiring students’ union election candidate and his supporters were allegedly detained in the commerce block. One platoon of police has been deployed on campus to maintain law and order.
One killed
Kendrapara: One person died when the ambulance that was taking him to the hospital met with an accident at Barabati village within Kaupada panchayat in Kendrapara district on Monday. The patient, identified as Dolagobinda Swain, died on spot.
Girl raped
Koraput: A differently-abled girl was raped on the pretext of being given a job at Baipariguda in Koraput district on Monday. The girl’s family has lodged a complaint with Baipariguda police stationand the cops sent her for a medical check up, said sources.
Doctors strike
Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Medical Services Association, a body of government doctors has announced to resort to cease-work agitation from November 4 if their 11-charter of demands, including the Dynamic Assured Career Progression, a time-bound promotion scheme, was not implemented.
Murdered
Puri: A resident of Batagaon village in Puri Sadar police station was murdered by two fellow villagers after he denied to pay extortion. The deceased was identified as Ganghadhar Gaja.
Chimpanzee
Bhubaneswar: An infant chimpanzee named John died at Nandankan Zoological Park on Monday. According to deputy director Jayant Kumar Das, John breathed his last early morning. He was suffering from cold since the last few days. John died while undergoing treatment for his ailment.
Braveheart
Bhubaneswar: A student of Utkal Karate School fought three attackers and forced them to leave behind the looted items and their motorcycle. The braveheart, Chinmayee Bhuyan,said at 8.30pm on Sunday, she was returning from the karate school, when she was intercepted by three goons on a motorcycle. They snatched her mobile phone and purse and fled from the spot. But she did not lose courage and got hold of the goons.
Ex gratia
Bhubaneswar: Condoling the death of soldier Pitabas Majhi in Uri sector, chief minister Naveen on Monday announced an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh for the family members of the martyr. Pitabas Majhi of Nuapada district, had succumbed to injuries after being hit by a bullet on the night of September 22 during a combing operation following the Uri attack in Jammu and Kashmir. An official statement said Rs 5 lakh would be given from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund and remaining Rs 5 lakh from the state government’s defence and para-military employees’ assistance fund. This apart, the state government also made provision of Rs 2,000 pension per month for the next of the kin of the martyr from the defence and para-military employees’ assistance fund. Naveen expressed grief over the incident and highly praised the bravery of Majhi.
