CM files papers

Bhubaneswar: Chief minister and BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik on Friday filed his nomination papers for election to the party’s state president post. Senior party leader Bikram Keshari Arukh submitted two sets of nomination papers to the returning officer Pratap Keshari Deb on behalf of Naveen. Deb said only Naveen had filed the papers for the party's top post.  

Kidnap plan

Bhubaneswar: The five SIMI operatives arrested from Rourkela on February 17 had planned to kidnap a doctor in Jharsuguda, police said on Friday. The quartet, after escaping from Khandwa jail in Madhya Pradesh in October 2013, had taken shelter at Sambalpur for a brief period and during which, they had planned to abduct a doctor for ransom, said the police. The cops also said the group then stayed in a forest in Rayagada for around two weeks before moving to Telangana.

Poacher held

Balasore: Nilgiri forest staff members arrested a 33-year-old man on poaching charges. They also confiscated mouse deer meat from Sania Singh, who hails from Chaindar village. The accused person was produced in court while three others fled from the Kuldhia sanctuary zone.

Jailed for life

Balasore: The additional district and sessions judge of second court has sentenced a murder accused to life imprisonment. The convict, Harekrushna Behera of Ayodhya village within the limits of Nilgiri police station, had killed his wife Anita Behera by hitting her with an iron rod on November 14, 2013.

Cracker unit

Sambalpur: Eight people suffered grave injuries after a crackers’ godown caught fire on Masjid Street near the District Headquarters Hospital in Bargarh town early on Friday morning.
