Mercury rise

Bhubaneswar: The state capital recorded a temperature of 40.9 degrees Celsius on Saturday. The city recorded the state’s highest temperature for the fourth consecutive day this summer. Many other places, including Malkangiri, Titilagarh and Cuttack, also recorded temperatures around 39 degrees in the past 24 hours. Meteorological centre director Sarat Sahu said absence of rain was responsible for high temperatures in February. 

CDP protest

Rourkela: Around 800 tribals led by Birmitrapur MLA George Tirkey on Saturday demonstrated against the implementation of comprehensive development plan (CDP) here by the development authority. They were protesting against the inclusion of fifteen villages around Rourkela in the CDP. Tirkey said such plans could not be implemented in Rourkela as it was a part of Sundargarh district.

Chief Justice

Bhubaneswar: Justice Vineet Saran will take oath as the 29th Chief Justice of Orissa High Court on February 26. A senior judge of Karnataka High Court, Justice Saran will replace Justice D.H. Waghela, who became the Chief Justice of Bombay High Court.

Mob attack

Bhubaneswar: A mob on Saturday attacked Godipada police outpost after they failed to arrest a murder-accused. The police resorted to lathi charge and lobbed tear gas to disperse the crowd.
