School death 

Bargarh: The death of a primary school student after being electrocuted during school hours on Tuesday triggered tension at Pipilipalli village in the Sadar police limits. The deceased has been identified as Chandramani Sahu, 9. Villagers gheraoed the school demanding compensation for the victim’s family.

Woman dies

Balasore: A 35-year-old woman died in Nilgiri after being struck by lightning. The deceased, identified as Laxmimani Singh of Ayodhya, was struck on Wednesday afternoon.

Robbery 

Balasore: A passenger on the Hyderabad-bound East Coast Express was robbed after being drugged. Police found the victim, identified as Piku Das of Hoogly district in Bengal in serious condition and admitted him to a hospital in Soro.

Student clash

Balasore: Two student groups clashed at the UN College in Soro ahead of the students’ union elections on Wednesday. 

Fire mishap

Bhubaneswar: Five persons were critically injured after a gas cylinder burst at Athgarh in Cuttack. The injured are being treated at SCB Medical College and Hospital.

Jailed

Bhubaneswar: The Balasore district judge on Monday awarded life  imprisonment to a 60-year-old for hacking a woman to death at a village in the district two years ago. The court also slapped a penalty of Rs 2,000 on the accused, Parikhita Dalei. Parikhita, a native of Gobindapur village, had killed Santana Dalei, 62, of the same village following an altercation over a minor issue on June 28, 2010.

Celebration

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Sahitya Academy is going to celebrate the birth centenary of Binode Kanungo, compiler of Jnan Mandal, a famous Odia encyclopedia. The celebration will commence from Wednesday at the Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya. 

Sports boost

Cuttack: The Odisha Olympic Association has decided to add 17 new districts of the state along with affiliating two state sports associations.

Darshan closed

Bhubaneswar: The evening darshan of Lord Jagananth in Puri will remain closed on August 7 in view of the proposed visit of President Pranab Mukherjee to the temple. This was decided at a meeting of Chhatisha Niyog (a confederation of 36 servitor groups) of the shrine.  

Loot

Bhubaneswar: Criminals looted gold and silver ornaments and Rs 10,000 in cash from a house at Unit-IV in the Kharavela Nagar police limits. The incident took place when Sadhu Charan Naik, a central government employee, and his family members were not at home.

New VC

Bhubaneswar: The Central University of Odisha in Koraput has nominated Sachidananda Mohanty as its new vice-chancellor. Mohanty is the former head of the English department at the University of Hyderabad. Mohanty will take full charge of his post shortly.
