Poachers arrested

Cuttack: Forest department officials arrested six persons, including three poachers, involved in various wildlife and elephant poaching cases in Athgarh. Athgarh divisional forest officer Arun Mishra said all the accused have been arrested in connection with several pending poaching cases in 1996, 2001 and 2002.   

Wife set afire

Angul: A man allegedly set his wife on fire at Katada village under Jarapara police station here on Sunday night for giving birth to two daughters .The woman Sunita, 25, has sustained 80 per cent burn injuries and has been admitted to a hospital in Cuttack where she is said to be critical. Police have detained her husband Murali Naik, 28, after registering a case of attempt to murder against him.

Youth dead

Bhubaneswar: The 23-year-old youth who had consumed poison in a bid to commit suicide in front of the state secretariat on Sunday, died today at Capital Hospital. The youth, identified as Nirakar Sahoo of Nuasasan in Cuttack district, attempted suicide over an alleged love affair. The youth had alleged that he was being framed in a case lodged by the husband of the woman he was in love with.

Accident

Sambalpur: A 34-year-old man died after the tractor he was driving overturned on the road at Chutipara under Kuchinda police on Sunday night. The deceased has been identified as Hrudananda Kaudi.

Bonus threat

Rourkela: Six major trade unions, including those who are part of the National Joint Council for Steel, have joined hands in condemning non-payment of bonus to workers of the Rourkela Steel Plant. They have also threatened to take appropriate steps in the interest of the workers in the coming days. 

Maoists kill 1

Malkangiri: Maoists killed a former Red rebel, who had surrendered before police two years ago, dubbing him as a police informer in Malkangiri district, the police said on Monday. The deceased, identified as Dambaru Sagadia, was one of the two tribals who had been abducted by a group of armed ultras on Friday from Mundaguda village in Mathili police station limits, said inspector in-charge of Mathili police station, P.K. Mallick.
