Brazil contest for city youth

Bhubaneswar, Aug. 5: Ajay Kumar Kar, a student of Central Tool Room and Training Centre (in the city, has been selected for the World Skills International Competition 2015 to be held in Sao Paulo, Brazil from August 11 to 15.

Ajay will represent India for the category of computer numerical control milling at the world skills, a one-of-its-kind international competition exclusively created for fostering the development of skills among youth across the world. The competition is held once every two years.

The computer numerical control milling is a process that can make complex jobs such as drilling and cutting, using a rotating cylindrical cutting tool. It is an important process to make high-precision machine parts for all kinds of industries.

Authorities at the institute said the competition inspired excellence among students and it was especially important as the future depended on an effective skills training system.

Ajay, who is quite excited for the competition and will be leaving for Brazil tomorrow with his guide and senior engineer Jajati Mohanty, said: "It's like a dream come true. I am really proud to represent my country in this competition, which is just like Olympics in the world of skill and technology development," he said.

"I am grateful to my institution and my teachers and looking forward to a lot of exposure and learning," he said.

The competition takes place in different developed countries and conducts contests in nearly 140 skills such as food processing, hair cutting, moulding, fashion, milling, lathe, welding, plumbing, tailoring and so on. Nearly 55 countries are taking part in the events this year.

Students from the centre had taken part in the 2009 event at London for the skills of lathe and plumbing.

The selection of Team India included 85 regional, 27 national and one final round before a jury of 58 members, who were picked from industry experts selected the winners.
