Balasore, Aug. 4: A fire broke out on a mobile tower installed atop a three-storey building today, raising safety concerns. However, the blaze caused no casualty or injury.

The fire broke out around 8am at the base terminal station of a tower belonging to Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL).

The flames were doused by the fire brigade personnel and the tower was deactivated by the BSNL authorities soon after the incident.

“An accidental fire that broke out in the base terminal station unit. The fire has been brought under control and the officer concerned has been asked to look into the matter,” said deputy general manager, Balasore telecom circle, Sarat Chandra Sahu.

Senior officials, who rushed to the site near Mandal market, said no major damage was caused except to two air conditioners of base terminal station unit.

“The battery banks and the base terminal station unit that houses facilities for 2G and 3G services are all safe. The power cable and mini links are also safe. If required, we may just have to replace the feeder cable,” said divisional engineer R.D. Majhi.

Firemen said the fire broke out from the malfunctioning air conditioners.

“I saw flames and thick black smoke billowing out of the tower while I was taking tea from a kiosk nearby. I immediately informed the fire station,” said Gouranga Das, a local resident .

The building, atop which the mobile tower was installed, was a kalyan mandap.

The building was, however, vacant as the owner had stopped the business of letting out the building for weddings and other social programmes.

Another mobile tower belonging to a private company was also installed atop the three-storey building.

The owner of a photo studio in the locality, Dillip Das, said: “Local residents had raised objection at the time the towers were installed.”
