Berhampur, July 15: A BJD supporter was killed and 10 were injured in a clash between the supporters of the BJD and the CPM at Badachakada village within the limits of Rambha police station in Ganjam district last night.
The victim, identified as Tutu Pradhan, was injured in a bomb attack. Later, he succumbed to injuries at the MKCG Medical College and Hospital here last night.
Sub-divisional police officer Santanu Padhi said a case had been registered based on the complaints lodged by the victim’s family. But, no arrest has been made so far in regard to the killing.
“There was a clash between two rival groups. No fresh violence has been reported at Badachakada village. We have deployed force and are keeping a vigil on the situation,” he said.
President of BJD Ganjam unit Subash Maharana alleged that CPM supporters had hurled about 300 bombs at Badachakada and adjoining villages in Poirasi gram panchayat of Ganjam block since Friday night.
“Our party workers will demonstrate in front of the block office and sit on a dharna demanding action against the culprits,” said the BJD district chief. The recent clash is believed to be a sequel to ongoing political rivalry between the CPM and the BJD supporters following the last panchayat polls.
Poirasi panchayat of Ganjam block, especially the Badachakada village, had been a CPM bastion for the last 20 years. “But, the CPM supporters were angry with villagers following their defeat in the last panchayat elections and tried to took revenge,” said Maharana.
However, the CPM leaders denied the allegations and described the clash as a sequel to a village rivalry. “It is not a political clash. The CPM has no connection with this. We do not have any branch or any member in Badachakada village,” said senior CPM leader Ali Kishore Patnaik.
