Bhubnaeswar: Bengal police with help of their local counterpart on Thursday arrested a politburo member of CPI (ML) (Red Star), Alik Chakraborty, from a private hospital in the city.
Deputy commissioner of police Anup Kumar Sahoo said Bengal police had asked for logistical support to nab the leader. "Another police team from Bengal is on their way to Bhubaneswar, and he will be produced in court on Friday," said Sahoo.
Sources said Chakraborty had been leading a movement at Bhangar in Bengal and evading the police for several months. The police said Chakraborty was leading a people's movement against setting up of a power grid station over fertile agricultural land in Bengal.
A team of 10 police officials from Bengal in plainclothes, along with city police, nabbed him around 4pm when he was in the hospital along with another person. "Bengal police told us that he had been wanted in around 70 cases. He reached Bhubaneswar on Wednesday from Hyderabad. He told us that he stayed at a house at Chandrasekharpur on Wednesday night," said a police official.
"We are trying to find out whether his sympathisers are also camping in the city."
