Calcutta: The Bengal panchayat elections will be held on May 14 and the votes will be counted on May 17 but the results in over 20,000 "unopposed" seats cannot be notified until the apex court gives the go-ahead.

Two court orders - one by the Supreme Court and the other by Calcutta High Court - on Thursday paved the way for the polls on Monday.

But the poll process will not be complete as the apex court restrained the poll panel from declaring the results in around 34 per cent of the seats where only one candidate - belonging to the ruling Trinamul Congress - was left in the fray.
