Utkal University hosted a mega blood donation camp on its premises to celebrate the varsity’s 75th foundation day. More than 200 units of blood was collected at the University Health Centre under the supervision of varsity’s medical officer Dushmanta Kumar Panigrahi. Physicians, who were present on the occasion, inspired the donors on the “noble” gesture that helps save lives and caters to the increasing demand of blood.
Gold medal
Senior under-officer of SOA University’s NCC platoon, Manish Kumar, was adjudged the best cadet in the senior wing for 2017 and won the governor’s gold medal. Kumar, a final-year mechanical engineering student at the Institute of Technical Education and Research, was the only cadet from the senior wing of the Odisha directorate.
Governor S.C. Jamir also gave him a cash prize of Rs 10,000 on the eve of NCC Day on November 26.
Automated library
Vice-chancellor of the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) Surendranath Pasupalak inaugurated automation of its central library in Bhubaneswar in the presence of principal secretary (agriculture) Saurabh Garg. Pasupalak said the automation system, with the KOHA library management software, would help cataloguing, circulation and online public access of various books, journals and reports. The OUAT adopted the guidelines of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Delhi, in following the library management procedure. The software will help students, faculties and scientists to obtain research information from diversified sources. A dragon fruit plantation drive was also held on the occasion.
Award for ICSI
The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI), Bhubaneswar chapter, bagged the ICSI National Best Chapter Award 2016 at the three-day Golden Jubilee Year National Convention of Company Secretaries in Thiruvananthapuram last week. The award was presented to chapter chairman Ashok Kumar Mishra, who thanked the members, students, directorates of the Odisha government, corporate houses, print and electronic media, educational intuitions of Odisha, other stakeholders and the Bhubaneswar ICSI team for the achievement.
Constitution Day
The postgraduate political science department of Vikram Deb (Autonomous) College, Jeypore, celebrated Constitution Day on November 26. Principal C. Savitri motivated the students and staff members to celebrate the day and encouraged the students to organise such events in the future. She also highlighted the role and importance of women in India by citing the chief guest — scientist Kamala Pujari. Pujari highlighted the essence of constitutional rights of citizens and the role of farmers in nation building.
NCC Day
Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College, Balasore, observed NCC Day with enthusiasm. Principal Srimay Das and Major Abhay Panda attended the event as guests and addressed the cadets, urging them to abide by the spirit of the NCC apart from propagating the government’s programmes such as Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao and Swachh Bharat Mission. Various cultural programmes were hosted and the winners of various competitions felicitated.
First aid
Soro Women’s College, Balasore, organised a first aid training camp under the aegis of Red Cross Society, Bhubaneswar. Around 60 students took part in the event where the trainers, besides giving tips, trained them about the first aid procedures. Ramchandra Rath and Bikram Mohanty, the trainers, also interacted with them and cleared their apprehensions regarding first aid.
Art competition
Art competitions among schoolchildren of various age groups was organised by the alumni of Balasore Art and Crafts College in order to encourage budding talents. More than 700 students took part in the event. The students showcased their imaginations on varying themes while the artists guided them on the nuances of art.
