Bhubaneswar: Customers continued to visit a number of ATMs with more number of such facilities ran out of cash on Wednesday.

ATM counters belonging to various nationalised banks, especially the SBI, displayed "no cash" on the screens and some of them even put down their shutters.

Attendants and relatives of patients visiting Capital Hospital were the worst sufferers as the sole SBI ATM counter on its premises remained cash empty. "I went to the ATM to withdraw money to pay the medicine bill, but it was closed. The security guard told me that there was no money. I was forced to walk down to AG Square to withdraw money in the sultry weather," said Mrinal Das, a relative of a patient.

Similarly, a number of ATM counters at Khandagiri, Madhusudan Nagar, Baramunda and Delta Square ran out of cash.

Customers were spotted waiting for the cash-loading vehicle. Besides, many were spotted standing in queues, apprehending further shortage of cash.

"I had to wait for around half an hour in front of an SBI ATM at Saheed Nagar as a number of other ATMs were not dispensing cash. It is an irony that customers are forced to wait to withdraw their money. If this situation persists for long, their will be chaos similar to the problem during demonetisation," said Saroj Pradhan, another customer.

While Khurda district has more than 630 ATMs, the maximum in the state, Bhubaneswar has more than 220 ATMs. A bank official said around 50 per cent of ATMs belonged to the SBI.

On the other hand, bank officials advised the customers not to panic, as the situation would improve in couple of days.

"The finance minister has already said the problem would be solved shortly. So, we advise the customers not to withdraw money impatiently. We have been closely monitoring the balance of the ATM counters," said an SBI official.
