Bhubaneswar: Appliqué craftsmen have come up with beautiful handicraft products at an exhibition, organised by the state handloom and handicrafts department, in the city.
The event aims to popularise the age-old craft of the state, which originated in Pipili . In the applique technique, small pieces of clothes of contrasting colours and textures are stitched together onto a large base fabric following a pattern or a design.
The technique is used to make various things like umbrellas, hanging lights, vases and mats. Five-one kiosks have been set up by artisans who have been working on the craft for more than 25 years.
"Canopies made using the applique technique are increasingly finding place in parties," said event manager Ananya Nath.
These days, the technique is being used in modern attires. "Garments are made using applique designs. They are in great demand among tourists. They also used for interior designing and decoration of homes," said artisan Rakshak Pradhan.
The traditional craft is now attracting many youngsters who are willing to learn the skill to build a career. A number of handicraft stores and institutes are providing training and employing young artisans in the city.
"Learning to sew patches of colourful clothes on a canvas and then it with sequins and laces is exciting and offers a good return," says Arabinda Patnaik, a young artisan.
"The traditional appliqué works have evolved into a modern art through innovations. While the waning interest among local residents for appliqué work has revived, the products find a great market abroad as well," said Sona Mohaapatra, a visitor at the exhibition.
