Angul, Dec. 8: Angul town will soon have its first parking zone in the busy bus stand area. The move for a parking lot has been made with with a committee headed by local sub-collector S Parida submitting a proposal to district collector Swamy D.V.

To review traffic and parking problems in the town with municipality officials of Talcher-Angul-Meramandali Development Authority (TAMDA) and others, the collector had formed all member committee to study the problem and suggest the plan to make the city beautiful and clean.

“The committee found an area belonging to the revenue department encroached upon at the government bus stand. This area can be developed into a parking place,” said the municipality executive officer Padmanav Nayak.

The proposed parking place will be handed over to municipal authorities to turn it into a parking lot. This would help traffic flow in the highly congested area said Nayak. He also hinted that encroachers would be evicted from government land.

Nayak said committee members found the Bazaar Road from the municipality office to Harimauri Chowk to be narrow as shopowners and locals have encroached on the area. To make the road wide, the committee has proposed eviction from government land and development of the road. “To avoid footpath encroachment and irregular vending zones, there will be a multi-storeyed building at the daily market area soon to accommodate traders and make the city clean and beautiful,” he said. He added that in the second phase another multi-storeyed building would come up at Indira market.

The executive officer hinted that there would be an ultra modern park near the police training college by Jindal Steel and Power Limited at the cost of about Rs 6 crore. The required land will be provided by the district administration. The 10 parks in the town will be handed over to various bodies to take care of the parks.

The most pressing problem of the town is the lack of a dumping yard for solid waste that is piling up on roads near Tamrit colony. None have come forward to float tender for construction of dump yard near Kusasinga village fearing backlash from the local villagers, he said. However, a fresh tender has been floated to invite bidders for the third time.

Collector Swamy D.V. said the district administration this time would also provide protection to contractors. “All efforts will be made to make the city an ideal place,” he told The Telegraph.

Mahendra Pratap Sahu, a resident of Amalapara where solid wastes have been piled up, welcomed fresh tender for yard construction. “Garbage has made the area a living hell,” he said.
