Bhubaneswar: Seventy-sevenstudents from various educational institutes will be drafted in the student traffic volunteer scheme to assist traffic personnel here.

At present, 115 students are part of the scheme that was launched in January last year. Police said the new volunteers were likely to be included this month. They will undergo basic training such as traffic norms and signages.

"They will assist our men in traffic management, besides creating awareness. The scheme has been successful so far with a number of youths starting to follow traffic norms," said assistant commissioner of police (traffic) Jatindra Kumar Panda.

The volunteers serve between 9am and 12pm and again from 5-8pm to ensure that their studies were not hampered. They are paid Rs 100 as stipend for three hours and deployed at intersections such as Rasulgarh, Rupali Square and Jayadev Vihar Square to assist traffic cops.
