Activities keep students busy

Kavya Hegde, a student of Xavier Institute of Management Bhubaneswar (XIMB), has won the Professor Ram Charan Young HR Icon Award, which was presented by National HRD Network. An MBA student of Human Resource Management department, Kavya received the award from D. Shivakumar, chief executive officer of Pepsico India.

Kavya Hegde, a student of Xavier Institute of Management Bhubaneswar (XIMB), has won the Professor Ram Charan Young HR Icon Award, which was presented by National HRD Network. An MBA student of Human Resource Management department, Kavya received the award from D. Shivakumar, chief executive officer of Pepsico India. The award is an initiative by the Young Minds Council of HRD Network in partnership with Ram Charan to recognise and reward emerging talents in the human capital space. It aims at recognising budding HR practitioners who are preparing themselves academically to test their mettle in the near future.

Bhubaneswar on reel

Virtual Showreel, the broadcasting group comprising students of Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan (SOA) University, has come up with a short film titled Bhubaneswar Blues. The students’ initiative aims at highlighting the various aspects of the capital city. Directed by Pratik Singh and written by Pracheta Padhee, the six-minute film speaks about the educational scenario and the cultural vibrancy of the state. The film also speaks about how Market Building at Unit-I has become a major hangout zone for the youngsters in the city. The film was released on YouTube last week and has already been viewed over 5,000 times and has been shared by viewers on various social networking sites. 

Pottery workshop

A two-day workshop on the relevance of pottery in archaeology was conducted by students of ancient history, culture and archaeology department of Utkal University on Monday and Tuesday. Experts from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) attended the workshop and spoke about the importance of pottery during various ancient civilisations and historical periods. The students also discussed about the changing paradigms of the pottery art form over centuries. A number of excavated pottery remains in Odisha were displayed during the programme to give the students an idea of the historical links of the craft. The students were also taught the basics of pottery making by traditional artisans and skills on inspecting drawings of pottery remains were also imparted. For the students, the experience of pottery making was quite enriching. 

Recruitment drive

Twenty-three students of Gangadhar Meher University (GMU) have bagged job offers from IT giant Tata Consultancy Service (TCS) during recruitment drive held on the campus on November 24. A total of 265 students from non-technical subjects took part in the one-day placement programme. The students will join the company once they complete their degrees in May 2016. The selected students are now conducting interactive sessions with the juniors on how to face interviews. In the current session, this was the second placement programme at the institution. Earlier, the Shoppers Stop Limited had visited the university in the first week of November. 

Licence camps

The regional transport office (RTO) in Balasore conducted an on-campus learners’ licence camp at Industrial training Institute, Balasore, earlier this week. Around 100 students were provided with learners’ licence on the campus after verification of their documents. Regional transport officer Amaresh Patra told the students that they would have to apply for a driving licence within six months. The students spoke to the experts about various traffic rules. The camp was also held at Soro College, where students were given driving licence. The state government provided licence to college students to reduce illegal driving by students who most of the time are found driving without any valid document. Earlier, such mobile licence camps were held in government colleges at Remuna, DK and Simulia. 

Tech fest

In a bid to provide a platform to budding scientists and exchange ideas, the students of Dhaneswar Rath Institute of Engineering and Management (DRIEMS) organised a technolgy fest on the institute premises. Students from over 40  educational institutions from different parts of the state and country took part in the fest. They presented different models to address various global environmental problems and provide remedy to keep the surroundings clean. A model helicopter made by the students of the mechanical branch of the institute was the centre of attraction during the two-day fest. The students claimed that the helicopter was built using mechanical techniques and no electrical gadgets were used in its construction. The students also interacted with each other on the various trends in the scientific field.

Anjali festival

The students of Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), Dhenkanal, acted as volunteers for the Anjali National Children’s Festival hosted in the city last week. A group of 16 students from the institute — 11 from English Journalism and six from Odia Journalism — took part in the camp and interacted with the differently-abled kids from across the country. Their responsibility was to document the happenings at the five-day event and release two bulletins, one each in English and Odia, everyday. While the Odia bulletin was titled, Snehanjali, the English one was named Our Anjali. The bulletins carried details of activities, interviews and comments.

Annual day

The students of Rourkela Institute of Management Studies (RIMS) celebrated the 32nd Annual Day of the institute on November 20 on the college campus. An Ashta Prahar meditation was organised on the occasion and students and staff members took part in the ceremony. The students conducted various kirtan sessions and read out various religious scriptures. This has been a tradition at the institute since its inception. An Anand Bazar fair was organised in the evening where the students presented a variety of cuisines. 

Smart city

The smart city race is picking up pace in Bhubaneswar and the involvement of educational institutions is giving a fillip to the campaign. The students of Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan (SOA) University recently took part in the drive and organised events to support the campaign. A programme to mark the launch of the smart city lab was organised in the university in which students joined the social media campaign to strengthen the city’s bid. The university authorities and students took up various activities for the campaign. The International Management Institute, Bhubaneswar, also hosted a workshop on its campus to support and take active part in the smart city campaign for the city. The faculty members and students took part in the workshop and discussed ways in which to make the city a better place to live in.
