Bhubaneswar: Police on Monday arrested two Congress activists a day a after a group of party supporters flooded the regional office of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) in protest against frequent waterlogging near Iskcon Temple here.
The protesters hired a water tanker and poured water at the NHAI office at Nayapalli. The police registered a case on the basis of a complaint by an executive engineer of the NHAI.
Manoj Kumar Sahoo and Mihir Ranjan Acharya were arrested under sections 452, 341, 323, 427 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code and other sections of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act.
Deputy commissioner of police Anup Kumar Sahoo said they were trying to identify the others. "We produced the accused in court and are trying to nab the other accused," he said.
The Congress, however, alleged that the cops forcefully picked up the activists around midnight.
"We have not damaged the files or properties. We only staged a demonstration as the authorities have failed to tackle the issue, which is getting acute every day. The police could have summoned them," said the party's Bhubaneswar district unit president Manas Choudhury.
