Bhubaneswar, Oct. 30: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik still has a 1980 model Ambassador car and he has taken a Rs 15 lakh loan from his sister Geeta Mehta.
These facts have been mentioned in the property list of Naveen uploaded on the state government's website that also has property details of his ministers.
The list also reveals that the socialite author-turned-politician, who celebrated his 70th birthday this month, is no great lover of jewellery or precious stones. Jewellery in the possession of Naveen is worth just Rs 1.89 lakh, a small amount considering the present rates of gold and precious stones. His jewellery box boasts of a gold ring, a gold pendant and a chain apart from rubies and diamonds.
While Naveen has no penchant for jewellery, his cabinet colleague, housing and urban development minister Puspendra Singh Deo has bought gold worth of Rs 15 lakh over the past one year.
However, Naveen continues to be the richest among his cabinet colleagues because he has inherited immoveable properties in Delhi and other places from his father Biju Patnaik and mother Gyan Patnaik. His immoveable assets include 22.7 acres of farmland in Faridabad, his share in Naveen Nivas and the family's Aurangzeb Road residence in New Delhi. The total value of his property is Rs 48 crore. Last year, the chief minister had dedicated his parental house - Anand Bhavan in Cuttack - to the people of the state. Though Naveen has been chief minister of the state for 15 years, his bank balance is only Rs 24 lakh.
Posting the property list of the chief minister and his ministerial colleagues is apparently an attempt to bring about transparency in public life, which will also boost the image of Naveen's government.
The loan liability of Naveen's cabinet colleagues - health minister Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak and food supplies and consumer welfare minister Sanjay Das Burma - has also increased. Sources said while the health minister had taken a loan to purchase a car, Das Burma has invested money in a new printing press that in his wife's name. Das Burma's assets are worth Rs 2.12 crore.
Panchayati raj and law minister Arun Saho has property worth Rs 30 lakh. That makes him the poorest minister in Naveen's cabinet. However, he has bought gold worth Rs 2 lakh for his wife.
Finance minister Pradeep Kumar Amat's property has gone up by Rs 2 lakh during the last one year. On the other hand, the property of agriculture minister Pradeep Maharathy, has registered an increase of Rs 47 lakh. Tourism and culture minister Ashok Chandra Panda's assets are worth around Rs 5 crore.
