Aizawl: Refuting chief minister Lal Thanhawla's claim that Mizoram is among four states which has the highest gross state domestic product (GSDP) in the country, Lalduhoma, the chief ministerial candidate of the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM), on Thursday said the state has Rs 7,887 crore liabilities which is 81.3 per cent of the state's annual budget.
The ZPM is a pre-poll electoral alliance formed by seven parties.
Addressing a news conference, Reformation of Mizoram, organised by the alliance at Vanapa Hall here on Thursday, Lalduhoma said the state government would be in complete state of impecuniousity if it paid its liabilities. "Of the total state budget, the government contributes only 8.3 per cent revenue from liquor sale and electric bill," he said.
Saying Mizoram lived "at the mercy" of Delhi, Lalduhoma alleged that the government had done nothing to generate revenue. He said the state had been reeling under power crisis under Congress rule "which could only generate 1MW of power in a year".
Quoting the 18th Power Survey of India, Lalduhoma said Mizoram had the potential of generating 3,663MWpower.
"God gives us two options for ruling our state and these two options are death or life and blessing or curse," he said.
Thousands of ZPM workers gathered at Vanapa Hall on Thursday to attend the conference.
