Guwahati, Dec. 6: The West Assam Milk Producers’ Co-operative Union Ltd (Wamul) will extend its services to Jorhat and Golaghat districts and set up a milk plant at Jorhat soon, said senior officials at a function organised to observe Purabi Milk Day in the city today.

Nearly 500 milk producers, representing dairy co-operative societies and institutions from different districts, attended the function, along with officials of the state government and National Dairy Development Board.

Three women entrepreneurs from Pathsala in Nalbari, Kamrup and Morigaon districts were felicitated on the occasion. At present, Wamul caters to Kamrup, Barpeta, Nagaon and Morigaon districts. Its milk processing plant at Panjabari can process 60,000 litres of milk per day.

“We will extend our services to the people of Jorhat and Golaghat districts under a special scheme. We will also set up a milk-processing plant at Jorhat, but its capacity will be less than our plant here. The World Bank will fund this initiative. The state government had requested the bank to provide funds to WAMUL. Once this plant is ready, we will be able to cater to a large number of customers in these two districts,” said M. Thakur, the managing director of WAMUL. “We will also upgrade our milk-processing plant here to increase its current capacity from 60,000 litres of milk per day to 1 lakh litres per day. Our products have been well received and the increase in capacity of the plant will help us reach out to more customers,” said Thakur.

As part of Purabi Milk Day celebrations, WAMUL has organised a cookery competition for amateur cooks on its premises on December 7. The participants will have to cook different items using milk and milk products of the Purabi brand.
