Krishna Kumar, a resident of S.K. Bhuyan Road in Latasil, was shocked to find his name was missing from the voter list. Poll officials told him that his family members, too, would not be able to vote this time as their names were missing from the list.

“I was shocked beyond words. I have been casting my vote at this polling station for several decades now,” Kumar, in his late 60s, told The Telegraph on Tuesday.

“The names of my wife Anita and our sons too are missing. The poll officials straightway told us that we would not be able to vote,” Kumar said.

Along with him, several other people, whose names were missing, assembled in front of the polling station and panicked. The situation, however, was brought under control by police within half-an-hour.

Kamrup (metro) deputy commissioner Biswajit Pegu said the names of these people were deleted in 2014 because they had shifted to Hatigaon.

“I have verified the facts and found that their names were deleted in 2014 and they couldn’t vote in the 2016 Assembly elections as well,” Pegu said.

“In October, the booth-level officers conducted door-to-door verifications to find individual voters. Following that, a draft roll was also published in January. If anyone has any objection, he can come and sort it out. It is the duty of voters as well to keep a tab on this process,” Pegu said.

The residents have formally lodged a complaint with the deputy commissioner. Pegu said they would investigate the matter as a formal complaint had been lodged.
