Guwahati, Dec. 14: Beauty and wellness brand VLCC today announced that it would set up a manufacturing unit of personal care products at Matia in lower Assam's Goalpara district.

Vandana Luthra, founder of VLCC, said the company would invest over Rs 28 crore in the unit set over 100,000 square ft area, nearly 115km form here.

"The land was provided by the Assam Industrial Development Corporation Limited last year and construction has already started. We are expecting to start functioning within one-and-a-half years - that is, from the middle of 2018. This will be our second manufacturing unit after the one in Uttarakhand and it will be capable of producing 86.41 million units of skin care, hair care and body care products per annum," Luthra, on her first visit to Assam, told the media here this evening.

She said the unit will create more than 600 direct and indirect jobs.

"Ninety per cent of recruitment for the industry will be done from Assam only. A few experts and technical personnel will be recruited from outside," Luthra said.

She said Assam is a perfect location for setting up the manufacturing unit as most of her products are ayurvedic and herb-based.

"As most of our personal products consist extracts from natural herbs, Assam, with its immense flora and fauna, is the most logical choice for us. We can get the ingredients from local markets," Luthra, who was here to interact with the media, said this evening.

"Moreover, over the recent years, the Northeast has shown that it is a goldmine of skilled people and fresh talent. The people here have knowledge of different herbs and beauty techniques which will be helpful for our company," she said.

The VLCC has four wellness centres in Assam - two in Guwahati besides one each in Tinsukia and Silchar.

Luthra said the company is coming up with 16 more centres in the Northeast within the next financial year.

Established in 1989, the VLCC has 330 centres across the world.

"We are also planning to open 15 vocational training institutes in Assam to use highly-talented and employable youths of Assam," she said.
