Feb. 6: In a rare mark of honour, Guwahati Archbishop Thomas Menamparampil has been appointed a member of the Vatican Congregation for Divine Workshop, the highest Roman Catholic forum for regulating and guiding liturgical worship and sacraments.
Menamparampil is among only two Asian bishops appointed to the congregation, the other being Bishop Joseph Zen Ze-Kiun of Hong Kong.
A communiqu? issued by Don Bosco Communications said the archbishop would be able to contribute towards promoting understanding among different cultures and communities and build bridges and reduce differences and conflicts.
The Vatican congregation, headed by Cardinal Francis Arinze of Nigeria, provides directives on the modes of worship in Catholic churches worldwide.
Reacting to his appointment, Menamparampil said he is happy to be of service to the Church and hopes to highlight the Asian attitude to religiosity.
The Guwahati archbishop currently holds two other offices in the Vatican as members of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and the Societies of Apostolic Life.
He is also a member of the Post-Asian Synod Commission set up by Pope John Paul II.
Art show: An art and design show, Maya, by artist-designer Kunal Kaushik was held on Sunday at the Sixth Mile area of the city. An exhibition of children?s art by students of Kunal?s Institute of Fine Arts and Design was also held on the occasion.
