Guwahati, April 3: More than 90 per cent calls received at Dial 100 - the city police emergency number - are unwarranted calls which have nothing to do with police.
Disclosing this, city police commissioner (in-charge) Mukesh Agarwal today said the Police Control Room (PCR) desk on the emergency/helpline number are receiving inquiries on power cuts, water supply and even complaints about defective cell phone SIM cards.
The emergency number gets between 90 and 95 per cent unnecessary calls.
"Through media I would appeal to the people to use this emergency number only to inform about a crime, accident or if someone is in distress. Unwarranted calls are not only a waste of time of the help desk staff but also keep the phone lines unnecessarily busy as a result of which the genuine victims can't reach the police in hours of need," he said.
Agarwal said from January to March, city traffic police have collected fine to the tune of Rs 81.77 lakh against violation of motor vehicle rules.
He said during this period, 1,438 cases of drink driving, 840 cases of driving without fastening seat belts and 211 cases of riding two-wheelers without a helmet were registered by city traffic police.
